Looking for a unique and simple succulent planter idea? I love upcycling or revamping an item that wasn’t originally created to hold plants/flowers. This decorative metal chicken feeder works perfectly for a simple succulent planter!
HOW DO YOU TURN THIS CHICKEN FEEDER INTO A
SUCCULENT PLANTER?
- drill some holes for drainage – I am all about drilling holes in all the things when it comes to potting plants. If you are not into that, just add some gravel or rocks to the bottom so the soil isn’t constantly sitting in soggy soil.
- add your favorite succulent soil – My favorite is MiracleGro Cactus, Palm and Citrus Potting Mix found almost everywhere that sells plants: Walmart, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, ACE, Menards…etc
- carefully place one succulent in each opening – This feeder kind of reminds me of a school lunch tray that keeps your food from touching. This is a great way for these lil’ succulents to practice social distancing!
- place in a sunny spot and water as needed
- enjoy your simple succulent planter project!
This is my favorite potting mix to use for all my succulent planter projects.
This is my tray full of succulents that I purchased from a local greenhouse. Succulents don’t always thrive forever in my zone but they are usually good to last a few months. That’s worth it to me to spend some of my plant $ on simple succulent planters like this one.
I bought this metal decorative chicken feeder from a local home decor store. However, I just realized while creating this post that you can purchase these on Amazon! Who knew?? Here is the link to buy your own: Galvanized Steel Metal Country Garden Planter Feed Trough Caddy with Handle 10 Compartments.
I literally copied the exact title from Amazon because it made me laugh! When I started writing this blog, I was like, “what is this thing even called?”. I would have never guessed it was 13 words long! I opted for “Simpler Succulent Planter” for my post title in lieu of using all 13 words… Here it is below: the galvanized steel blah blah blah.
And here it is all filled up and ready for sunshine!
